Praise: James Clyburn on Marriage Equality

Representative Clyburn of South Carolina, number three in the minority leadership, is spot on regarding marriage equality.  On the other hand, I suspect that national equality will only be possible through the courts, similar to what happened with interracial marriage as resolved by the Supreme Court in Loving v Virginia. 

The legislative route is easier if there is a Democratic Congress.  If we can simply see the overturning of DOMA, then marriages between people of the same gender may still not be possible in forty-four states, but those states would have to recognize marriages performed in the six states where marriage equality is the law (Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont) as well as the District of Columbia.  Without DOMA, that recognition of marriages would be required by Article IV, Section One of the United States Constitution.

Either way, thank you to Leader Clyburn.  Well said.

Praise: WE DO Campaign

The push for equality across the United States includes a very active effort in the South.  The Campaign for Southern Equality released a video at the end of last week that is an interesting twist, bringing in a positive religious component.  This in South Carolina, with Equality license plates available starting at the end of January.

Praise: South Carolina Equality License Plates

Everyone's attention is on South Carolina for the Republican primary election, but a little news slipped out on Wednesday of this week that would have all of the remaining GOP presidential contenders upset.  At the end of this month, South Carolina will begin offering an Equality license plate.

This follows similar news in Indiana just a few days earlier.

As in Indiana, this does fit with the variety of license plates already offered including

Choose Life SC

SC Ancient Free and Accepted Masons

Sons of Confederate Veterans


and Secular Humanists of the Low Country


There are lots more as in Indiana.  To compare and contrast just these five plates is likely to either make one angry or make one laugh.  Amazing.  The new plate is not yet on the Department of Motor Vehicles website.  I expect that won't happen until sometime after the primary.
